Abstract
Given the constraints Debt and economic crisis is posing on Nigeria, particularly, in its
pursuit of a dynamic and viable foreign policy, it becomes imperative for a study like
this. This study therefore attempts at answering, inter-alia, what constitute the forces
behind Nigeria's external debt? what challenge does this pose to Nigeria's sovereignty
and integrity? How does Nigeria pay these debt and at the same time pursue and
promote viable economic programmes? and lastly, how freely can the country conduct
her domestic and external policies given her level of indebtedness? The study, using
the dependency and under-development paradigm via the modernisation theory approach,
attempted to provide answers to the questions above, with a critical analysis
of the impact of debt and economic crisis on Nigerian Foreign Policy orientation and
posture. The study concludes with a recommendation on the possible way out.
