Abstract
Fractured crystalline rocks and the overlying overburden, which is derived mainly from the insitu decomposition of the former, are the two types of geologic environment in which groundwater occur in Bauchi area. The overburden is the most important and its thickness varies from 0 to about 75 meters. Groundwater table elevation ranges from less than 533 to about 655 meters above sea level. Transitiveness of the overburden vary from place to place and range from about 1.03 x 105 to 1,6 x 10-4 m/s. Estimates of the readabilities of the overburden also vary and range from about 214+ x 10-7 to 5.86 x 10-6 m/s. Yields of boreholes vary greatly from 1.4+ to 29.50 m3/h, specific capacities of boreholes lie between 0.06 to 2.32 m3/h/m with a mean of 0.65 m3 /h/m. Principal ions in the water are calcium and bicarbonate. The water is generally hard; it is suitable in chemical quantity for drinking, irrigation and some industrial purposes. Feces from pit latrines and septic tanks placed below ground surface are the main sources of groundwater contamination
