Abstract
The study is to assess the provision and usage of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) facilities on the students’ academic performance in secondary school students in Kaduna State, Nigeria. Five specific objectives, research questions and null hypotheses were formulated based to guide the study. The study adopted descriptive survey research design with the population of 12488 and sample size of 378. The instrument used for data collection was structured questionnaire tagged ―Assessment of the Provision and Usage of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Facilities on Students’ Academic Performance (APUICTFSAP) which contained 50 items. The data collected from the field were analysed using descriptive statistics of frequency and mean scores to answer all research questions. Inferential statistics of Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was used to test all the null hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The results revealed that Provision and usage of computers influence students’ academic performance by making them have access to educational resources, interact and collaborate on academic project and improve their critical thinking and stakeholders have similar views to that effect (p=221). Provision and usage of projectors influence students’ academic performance through enhancing their understanding, interest and participation and promote collaborative learning among students and difference on the opinions of stakeholders on this (p=219). Provision and usage of microphones influence students’ academic performance by helping them to hear teacher clearly during teaching, improve communication, confidence and clarity of instruction and difference that exist on the stakeholders’ perception on that (p=412). Provision and usage of software facilities influence students’ academic performance by enhancing them access to diverse learning resources, understanding, students’ engagement in learning activities and help them to develop critical thinking and stakeholders hold the same opinions on the influence (p=114). Provision and usage of Internet facilities influence students’ academic performance by making them have access to a wide range of educational resources, influences students' ability to conduct research for academic assignments, increased students’ engagement in online learning activities and motivate and explore students to learn beyond traditional classroom materials (p=119). The study concluded that provision and usage of computers, projectors and microphones improve students’ academic performances in secondary schools in Kaduna State. Software and internet facilities also enhance the academic performances of student in secondary schools in Kaduna State, Nigeria. The implication of these findings is that as many times as computers, projectors, microphones, software and Internet facilities were provided and used for teaching and learning, academic performances of secondary school students will improve. The study also recommended among others that Kaduna Stategovernment should make efforts to provide more computers and school authorities should ensure they are adequately used by the teachers for teaching and learning in secondary schools in Kaduna State. Kaduna Stategovernment should provide adequate projectors and alternative sources of power to use when the need arises by the teachers and students for teaching and learning in secondary schools in Kaduna State. Kaduna Stategovernment should make efforts to provide more microphones and school authorities should ensure they are adequately used by the teachers for teaching and learning in secondary schools in Kaduna State.
