Abstract
Recently, financial institutions have been crying out loud on the pains of debts in the Industry; many banks have gone out of business because of the strong wave of bad debts while some are left staggering. These prevailing circumstances have provided impetus to determine the cause of bad debts and proffer solution. The approach adopted was through personal interviews and administration of questionnaires to bank officials and customers. The study discovered that banks generally have excellent credit policies but have problems with management of credit. Personal motivation, lack of transparency, lack of collateral and indiscipline of fund managers were highlighted as some of the problems associated with credit management. In view of the serious impact of poor credit management on banks, the following recommendations were made; that collateral offered to cover any bank loan must be duly perfected before any disbursement of fund; that the dreadful activities of insiders abuse must be stopped and properly checked so as minimize the high rate of untimely death of banks; and that our legal system should be made more effective in debts recovery. More so, the snail pace at which our law courts handle debt recovery cases has left much to be desired
