Abstract
A B S T R A C T
The problem of this study is that of high rate of brain drain of business teachers
from teaching to the business sector of the economy which has created shortage of
business teachers in both Federal and State Colleges of Education in Nigeria.
The purpose of this study is to identify the variables which relate to job
satisfaction among business teachers in Nigeria.
The research method adopted is the survey research method. It is based on
information gathered through questionnaire. The population of the study comprises of
244 business teachers in all 17 Federal Colleges of Education and 23 State Colleges of
Education that offer business education courses in Nigeria. A sample of 140 business
teachers was drawn from this population. The statistical methods used to analyse data
were: discriminant analysis, contingency table and pearson products moment correlation.
The findings revealed that:
1. job satisfaction is independent of work performed among business teachers was
accepted
job satisfaction is independent of job advancement prospect among business
teachers was also accepted
job satisfaction is independent of recognition among business teachers was
accepted;

4. job satisfaction is independent of working condition and benefits among business
teachers was accepted;
5. job satisfaction is independent of administrative policy and supervision among
business teachers was accepted;
6. job satisfaction is independent of salary among business teachers was also
accepted;
7. Job satisfaction is independent of social interaction among business teachers was
accepted.
This study marks the beginning of several studies needed to determine the causes
of job satisfaction/dissatisfaction in organisations in all relevant fields in government and
industries.
