Abstract
ABSTRACT
The study was undertaken to find out the perception of
urban couples in their traditional and contemporary roles.
The study also investigated the preferred changes in gender
roles of urban couples. The null Hypotheses stated were
tested using t-test in order to determine the existence of
significance for the acceptance or rejection of each of the
hypothesis.
The main research method adopted for the study was survey
method. The data collected was by means of questionnaire.
The questionnaire was administered to 3 00 couples selected for
the study in the six local government area in Lagos State.
The data collected were analysed using frequency distribution
and percentages.
The findings of the study revealed that gender was one of
the major factors that influenced the couples roles.
Education, contrary to our believe does not have any bearing
in the roles of couples.
According to the findings, the following were also
revealed:
(1) The traditional roles of couples are still
practiced by couples in the urban cities.
(ii) The women have additional roles apart from
their traditional roles. They contribute to
the financial management of the home.
(iii) Couples preferred changes to be made in some
areas of their roles, such as financial
management, household chores, and decision
making.
(4) They indicated their willingness to preferred roles
in the home for the smooth running of the home,
It was found that there was no difference in the opinion
of men based on education on their traditional and
contemporary roles likewise the women. There was difference
in the traditional and contemporary roles of urban couples
and lastly significance difference existed between husbands
and wives on their preferred roles.
Recommendations were made for the couples to adjust their
roles for more effective family living. For example
(1) Couples should within themselves take up preferred
roles
(2) Joint decision of both husband and wife should
prevail among families.
(3) Couples should avoid gender distinction among their
children when sharing roles.
(4) Roles should be taught in primary schools, domestic
and vocational schools in order to prepare students
for their future roles in the home.
