Abstract
Wrban Planning A u t h o r i t i e s al1 ever the world play a role in t i e physic
development of Urban Centres, in an organised manner to achieve l i r e a b i l i ty
in the i n t e r e s t of the public. The genesis of planning Administration is
Nigeria, or anywhere in the World emanates from an unprecedented growth an.:
development of c i t i e s through time, characterized by rapid increase in
population. This is due l a r g e l y to rural-urban migration, which is as a
r e s u l t of the a t t r a c t i v e nature of the c i t i e s i n f r a s t r u c t u r a l development.
This study attempts to find out the role Kano S t a t e Urban Development
Board play in the physical development of the s t a t e , in view of the existing
planlessness of our urban c e n t r e s , due to spread of haphazard and i l l e g al
developments for which the board v/as e s t a b l i s h e d to c o n t r o l . To t h i s a f f e c t,
the study went further to r e l a t e trie a c t i v i t i e s of the board, with the
provisions of the laws that provided the legal backing for the b o a r d 's
o p e r a t i o n s . This also cor t a i n s the functions and powers of the board,
thus assessing i t ' s performance.
The r e s u l t indicate that the board is not performing up to the
standard expected. However, the problems that led to t h i s were i d e n t i f i ed
which include insufficient funding and s t a f f i n g as per the r e s p o n s i b i l i t i es
of the board a l l over the s t a t e . It was also discovered, that the board's
a c t i v i t i e s are concentrated in the metropolitan area of Kano. with very
l i t t l e achievement in the other urban centres of the s t a t e.
In conclusion, a recommendation was made on how the board can
improve i t ' s financial and s t a f f i n g position along with a framework for a
b e t t e r s t a t e wide performance.
