Abstract
An evaluation of commuters‟ perception of graphic design factors in Light-Emitting
Diode (LED) advertisement (ad) in Ibadan, Nigeria: LED advertisement has received various
criticisms due to its perceived abuses on our roads which led to its ban in many countries. In
spite of the existential warning from American Medical Association that a glare from roadway
illumination imagery from LED advertisement is detrimental to safe driving, and despite the
observation that, LED advertisement lining up Nigeria‟s roadways are characterized by graphic
design flaws and could put commuters at risk at any attempt by motorists to want to access the
message deliveries on motion, the medium have continued to make its presence felt in many
urban centres. This study fills the noticeable daunting gap. The researcher therefore set out to
interrogate the perception of commuters on the graphic design factors in the use of LED
advertisement on commuter safety in Nigeria. Data were collected using purposive sampling
technique with open-ended questionnaire and interview as instruments. Qualitative and
quantitative descriptive analyses were adopted using statistical table and chi-square (

) to
explain, summarize and to draw up conclusions. Findings indicate that, motorists have been
operating in a visually complex environment and that, there are indeed problems with graphic
design factors on most LED advertisement lining up Nigerian roads. In order to find solution to
these problems, visual contents of the sampled materials were redesigned graphically using
digital design processes to enhance readability of the message delivery. The efficacy of the
redesigned templates could not be empirically tested, because there is no such contemplation to
do so, due to time and financial constraint. However, it is of the researchers‟ view that, the
redesigned graphic content (templates) of the LED advertisement will communicate effectively
to break every communication barriers for easy visual accessibility. The redesigned (alternative)
graphic design content templates for LED advertisement took care of any communication design
flaws for easy visual accessibility or readability. This implies that, all things being equal,
commuter safety should be guaranteed on Nigeria‟s roads
