Abstract
Description
The study of class formation in Sokoto town
which is contained her in an attempt to
demonstrate the relevance of maxis analysis
analysis in a remote urban selecting in Africa. Its
point of departure of the crisis
of such a method of Anallise . It is often
claimed by those that maxis method
is irrelevant because it was developed on the basic
of the advanced class relations of metropolis
capitalism .
in African , it is argued, classes s do not
exist or are of little significant in comparison
without other division such as based on ethnicity,
regional and religious difference, age groups,
urban - rural division set c . No attempt here is
made to evaluate the relative significant of
class division . Our main purpose has rather boon
to exploit how successive tags in the integration
of sokoto into the world specialist economy have
served to transform of local society on class line
also manifesting themselves at the level of class
organisation and the class nature of the state .
We also find that the differentiation on in.
the pre- colonial period has influence the
process of colonial arid post - colonial classes
formation , especially at the level of the ruling
classes , where f euda1 social relation continue to
he important in grouping up the power of the
colonial of our geologies,
Our method has been to first survey the
development of t h e economy from the origin of the
city , emphasizing the rapid transformation form
places since the late colonial period and the
impact of the petroleum economy in particular.
On the basic of such account of the structure of
economic activity in the town we then proceed to
identify the various class categories which can be
' deduted' from such a structure .
To illustrate how some o f these c1ass
categories also can be seen to hove concrete
organisational form, we then went on to present
some organisation in sokoto which have been
established represent election of workers,
professional , and business interest . We finally
discussed the state it self end how it can be seen
as a class of organisation of that our geologies , in
promoting the interest of that class , whether
foriegn or local
