Abstract
The broad aim of the study was to identify JSS I
students' conceptions about light in Nnewi Educational Zone.
Three hundred and eighty (380) randomly selected JSS 1
students selected from the school zone, out of an estimated
1800 students population were used for the analysis of data.
The data for the main study was collected by means of
multiple choice test, "SCLAT". The "SCLAT" has a reliability
of 0.68 and was made up of forty (40) items drafted from eight
categories of light and its related phenomena. These
categories are light as a physical entity, sources of light,
causes/effect of day and night, reflection, refraction of light
by water droplets (rainbow), shadow, characteristics of images
formed by a plane mirror, and propagation of light. Subjects
ideas were assessed as to their consistency with
scientifically acceptable ideas. Respondents were thus grouped
by their selected explanations, namely the occurrence of
scientifically accepted ideas and unaccepted (misconceived)
ideas. The findings revealed that more students had
misconceptions about characteristics of images formed by a
plane mirror, light as an entity, reflection of light, shadow,
and refraction of light. However, more students held
scientifically accepted ideas about propagation of light,
light as a source, and effect/causes of day and night.
Due to the many misconceptions of light and its related
phenomena held by the students, science instructors should
take great pain to find out where their students are in their
understanding of light phenomena so as to maximise learning
