Abstract
ABSTRACT
An investigation was carried out during the 1987 cropping year at Samaru, Zaria, to study the effect of three sowing datea (June 24, July 8 and July 22), three plant population
(200,000; 350,000 and 500,000 plants/hectare) and two soybean varieties (TGX536.020 and TGX814-26D) on growth, yield and yield components of soybean. Seed sown on June 24 with a mean seed yield of 2647.88kg/ha
out-yielded that sown on July B and July 22, respectively. Delay in showing from June 24 to July 8 and July 22 led to a decrease in number of flowers, pods per plant, effective
nodules (8 WAS), crude protein, oil content and 100-seed weight Increasing plant population led to increase in crude protein
content, effective nodules (84AS), plant height and plant lodging. Variety TGX814.26D out-yielded variety TGX536-02D in number
of flowers, pods per plant, crude protein and had higher grain yield While variety TGX536-D2D had higher number of nodes, lodged plants and number of branchea than variety TGX814-26D.
