Abstract
Investigations were carried out at the Institute for
Agricultural Research farm, Samaru, Zaria during the 1992 dry
season to determine the effect of rooting media on root and
shoot growth of varieties of grapevine (Vit is vinifera L.).
Three experiment were conducted using fresh, 3 and 6 weeks
callused cuttings . Treatmnts consisted of seven rooting
media as main-treatments and eleven varieties of grapevine as
subtreatments laid out in a split plot design replicated six
times. In all the three experiments Anab x American seedling
was observed to have an edge over all the other varieties
tested with respect to apical and basal shoot length, shoot
fresh and dry weights, number of leaves per cutting. Leave
area number of roots, root volume, root fresh and dry weights
and basal shoot girth among among other vegetative characters
studied. In the rooting media treatment, the rooting media,
potting mixture III (75% sand, 12.5% FYM, 12.5% Topsoil) 100%
ricehull and potting mixture II (50% sand, 25% FYM, 25%
Topsoil) resulted in the best performance in fresh, 3 and 6
weeks callus cuttings respectively.
