dc.description.abstractThe rationale for this study has been as a result of the increasing concern people seem to have in the alarming number of illiterate adults despite concerted efforts by governments, educational institutions and individuals to wipe out adult illiteracy from our society. Many problems have been identified as militating against the achievement of this noble objectives and the solutions have yielded little success. As a result, the researcher found it interesting to deliver and evaluate a developed programme of Social Studies for Post Literacy learners in Adult Education in order to determine its effectiveness and whether the objectives of the programme were being achieved or not. Also, to determine the suitability of programme contents, the learning activities, the evaluation techniques employed for evaluating the teachinglearning process of these adults, the availability of teachinglearning materials and at general performances of these adults at this level. The population of the study consisted of one thousand five hundred (1,500) adult learners. The sample of the study consisted of five hundred (500) adult learners. The following instruments were employed for the study: Questionnaire for adult learners, questionnaire for instructors, oral interview schedule for instructors and observation. The results obtained from the analysis of the data collected concerning opinions of both instructors and adult learners were tabulated. In the response, the instructors and adult learners gave favourable position to Social Studies as a component of Adult Education programme. They all resolved that the Agency for Mass Literacy employ permanent and qualified instructors to teach the adults. The objectives were achieved and the contents suitable. Effective citizenship, easier problems solving and decision making were the major strengths of Social Studies for adult learners. While production of materials both for the the instructors and the learners in terms of textbooks were the major problems facing Social Studies for these categories of learners. It was thus recommended that, Social Studies should be included in Adult Education programme and self-evaluation techniques should supplement formal evaluation techniques employed for evaluating adult learners performances. Similar programme should be developed reflecting other areas and levels of Adult Education, Basic, Post and Secondary Literacy levels. Studies of various dimensions of adults learning is needed so as to come up with suitable tools and procedual models of evaluation.en_US
