Abstract
This study investigated the impact of GSM Coverage in Nigeria on the economic
welfare of citizens. The study used both primary and secondary data. The primary data was
obtained through 200 questionnaires issues to GSM mobile line subscribers in Abuja,
comprising subscribers of MTN, Airtel, Globacom and Etisalat randomly selected from
Kubwa , Dutse , Lugbe, Kuje, Gwagwalada, Gwarinpa, Wuse and Central Area, all within
Abuja the Federal Capital Territory through the use of random sampling . The data were
analyzed using both regression analysis and chi square techniques in addition to
descriptive tools such as tables and simple percentages. The study established that a
positive and significant relationship exists between GSM Mobile Lines Teledensity
(GMLTD) and the Economic Welfare of Citizens (EW). The studies also identified
some of the challenges facing GSM subscribers in Nigeria. The study also observed
that poor service delivery and inefficiency in mobile communication have acted as a
significant impediment to the potentially greater contribution of the sector to
economic growth. The study therefore recommends that the National Communication
Commission should enhance its regulatory efforts especially in the area of service
delivery.
