The major objective of this study was to assess the personality traits, vocational interest and training levels of the practising counsellors and the effectiveness of guidance programme in the Federal Capital Territory Secondary Schools. Five research questions were asked and five hypotheses were also formulated. The population of this study was made up of practising counsellors, teachers and students. In specific, 45 counsellors, 331 teachers and 728 students were sampled. The instrument for data collection were a modified version of Holland's Self- Directed Search (SDS), Bakare's Vocational Interest Inventory (VII) and Guidance Programme Appraisal Scale (GPAS) constructed by the researcher. All these instruments have psychometric properties of validity and reliability established for them. Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), chi-square and Product Moment Correlation were the statistical techniques used to analyse the data. The findings of the study revealed that practising counsellors in Federal Capital Territory belong to the social group, hence Holland typological theory is applicable to the practising counsellors vocational interest pattern and personality types. The study further revealed that Bakare's vocational interest inventory which is an indigenous inventory can also be used to identify the counsellors' vocational interest area. From the findings of the study, it can be concluded that: as a group, counsellors in the Federal Capital Territory belong to the social personality type, bearing relevance to Holland typological theory. Sex was not an intervening variable vi in the vocational choice of practising counsellors in Federal Capital Territory. Teachers and students perceived their counsellors and counselling programmes as being effective. Based on the findings and conclusions, it was recommended that employers of labor should endeavor to employ candidates who exhibit congruency between their personality type and the career requirement they want to undertake.en_US
