The objective of this study was to determine the relationships between socio-economic, perception and cultural characteristics of women and participation in WIA programme, and examine the benefits they derived from the programme. The study was conducted in the Northern Zone of PADP from March to April, 1997. Sixteen villages from four Local Government Areas were purposively selected because of the high concetrantion of women farmers who were growing maize and Irish potato which were the crops selected for the study, and the high number of WIA staff in the zone. Data were collected from 181 randomly selected respondents using a questionnaire interview method and analysed by descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, Stepwise regression and student "t". Pearson correlation analysis showed that six of the thirteen variables studied were significantly related with participation in WIA Programme. Perception of programme's rules and regulations, number of associations to which women belonged, land ownership and extension contact (with coefficient of 0.7793, 0.3999, -0.3116 and 0.3627 respectively) were significant at 1 percent level of significance. Formal education and wealth status (with coefficient of 0,1804 and 0.2280 respectively) were significant at 5 percenten_US
