dc.description.abstractThe present study focuses on peasants as they are presented in two novels: Gouverneurs de la rosee by Jacques Roumain and 0 pays mon beau peuple by Sembene Ousmane. The picture we get from these novels is that of a peasant class which lives in deplorable conditions and which is exploited not only by the government but also by the privileged members of the society. But the two writers do not stop at describing the condition of the peasants. As Marxists, they use their works to also indicate possible ways of bringing about an improvement in the situation of the peasants. Incidentally, the two writers see cooperative ventures as a possible solution. Our study is divided into three chapters. Chapters One and Two are devoted to Gouverneurs de la rosee and 0 pays mon beau peuple respectively. In each of these chapters, an attempt is made to provide a detailed analysis of the sociopolitical background to the novel under investigation, followed by an examination of the contemporary reality described by the authors and a discussion on the diffferent groups that make up the society and the interactions between them. Chapter Three provides a synthesis of the major themes developed by the two writers. On the whole, the study brings out the fact that the solution to the problems of the peasants cannot be found in religion. Only concerted effort on their own part can bring vi the peasants out of their miserable condition. Manuel and Oumar, the two heroes in the novels, have shown the way and their ideas seem to have caught on, making one to believe that, as far as the two writers studied are concerned, the future is not necessarily bleak. Indeed, they are optimistic that change is likely to come.en_US
