Abstract
The study is an exploratory research centred on criteria,
other than academic attainment that might be used for
identifying entrants to teachers colleges who are likely
to become effective classroom teachers. Five Cultural
and personality variables were identified as follows:
Home Background, Cultural Universals, Attitude to Teaching,
Personality and Self Concept. Three scales were designed
by the researcher to measure Home Background, Cultural
Universals and Attitude to teaching. Standardized tests
were used for the measurement of personality and self
concept variables. Final year Teaching performance scores
were collated and this data represented the dependent
variable to the five independent variables mentioned here.
The investigation covered a sample of 529 final year students
from six Colleges of Education/Advanced Teachers' Colleges
in Northern Nigeria. For an exploratory research it was
found necessary to analyse the results with several
different methods: the Pearson Product Moment Correlation
analysis was backed by Regression and Multiple Classification
Analysis.
The study report showed that Personality variables
and Home Background variables had no statistically
significant relationship (or influence) on teaching
performance. Three of the independent variables, Attitude
to teaching, Cultural Dimension and Self Concept showed
significant statistical relationships with teaching
performance.
As expected, it was concluded that the conventional
method of selecting, "teachers college entrants by their
academic achievement is not adequate. Attitudinal scales,
Self Concept and Cultural Dimension scales could identify
the candidates that are likely to become effective and
dedicated classroom teachers. The need for further research
to sharpen tools for selection of candidates to teachers
college was identified.
