Abstract
Undoubtedly, one of the major and important sectors of the Nigerian economy is
agriculture, lnspite of the importance of the oil sector, agriculture continues to supply the bulk of
employment, income, food and raw materials required for the country's agro-allied industries.
Therefore, no meaningful national economic development and improvement in the standard of
living of the generality of the citizenry can take place without developing the agricultural sector.
This sector has continued to deteriorate over the years, its importance notwithstanding, to
the extent that the country had to resort to importing agricultural produce including food items.
The pathetic agricultural situation has led concerned authorities to examine closely the
problems confronting agricultural development. And of primary importance amongst the
multiplicity of problems facing the sector is the inadequacy of credit to said productivity.
In an effort to check to check this situation, the Federal Government, through the Central
Bank of Nigeria, has taken several steps to boost agricultural production in the country. These
policy instruments range from monetary to fiscal in nature. The aim has always been to skew total
bank lending in Favour of the agricultural sector.
There are, consequently, so many challenges ahead of CBN in the next decade some of which
are highlighted in this paper, solutions to some of the problems posing to agricultural development
have been pro founded. The apex bank therefore needs to adopt the fastest and safest means of
reaching these solutions for the derivation of all the advantages of the sector
