dc.description.abstractto books and other library collections and this subsumes why preservation and conservation (PAC) of library resources - which is investigated in this Dissertation - has become imperative on the part of library managers and their team of workers. Besides, library users and even staff as well as natural disaster occurrences equally reduce the useful life of some books or destroy others completely. Since the effects of some of these are imperceptible initially until serious havoc has been caused, it becomes necessary - I should say mandatory - for Library Administrators to make the internal as well as the external library ambience conducive for both collections and people. This, among others, entails installing anti-theft devices at the vestibule, proper and careful handling of the items, and not forgetting to plan for disasters. Such preparations should be proactive rather than reactive if they are to be effective and not to take the librarians unawares. In addition, the effect of acidic paper which Publishers use in book production is also highlighted and the use of alkaline papers advocated. Although the study puts PAC of library items in academic libraries in tropical countries at the forefront, its substance is thought to be valid for other libraries both in tropical and temperate regions.en_US
