Abstract
The compelling factors of cost, price and competition are
frequent reminders to the business executive that he must use his
resources wisely and economically. Not so with the university
manager/administrator. He often does not know whether the money, the
people and plant entrusted to his care are being fully and effectively
utilized. This work therefore is an attempt to determine job
satisfaction in the Registry and Bursary departments, Ahmadu Bello
University, Zaria. The findings were tested against some hypothesis
of job satisfaction like job satisfaction loads to higher performance,
job satisfaction is related to salary structure, supervision, sex and age.
A computerized analysis of the data collected shows that staff
of both departments are satisfied with their job despite the
monotonous nature of the job and the threat of retrenchment hanging
over their head. The findings also shows that the satisfaction cuts
across, age, sex, educational qualification, rank, working
experience, family responsibility and religion. This is not to say
they are 100% satisfied. The areas of dissatisfaction include
supervision, management and provision of social amenities. A
comparision of the two departments whow th/t Registry staff are
slightly more satisfied with their job than the Bursary staff. However
despite their satisfaction, the Bajoga Committee report shows that they
are not performing.
The recommendation calls on the management of the university to
carry out a further study to discover the reason for the
dissatisfaction. Academicians are also called upon to exploit further
