Abstract
The compelling factors of cost, price and competition are frequent reminders to the business executive that he must use his resources wisely and economically. Not so with the university manager/administrator. He often does not know whether the money, the people and plant entrusted to his care are being fully and effectively utilized. This work therefore is an attempt to determine job satisfaction in the Registry and Bursary departments, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. The findings were tested against some hypothesis of job satisfaction like job satisfaction loads to higher performance, job satisfaction is related to salary structure, supervision, sex and age. A computerized analysis of the data collected shows that staff of both departments are satisfied with their job despite the monotonous nature of the job and the threat of retrenchment hanging over their head. The findings also shows that the satisfaction cuts across, age, sex, educational qualification, rank, working experience, family responsibility and religion. This is not to say they are 100% satisfied. The areas of dissatisfaction include supervision, management and provision of social amenities. A comparision of the two departments whow th/t Registry staff are slightly more satisfied with their job than the Bursary staff. However despite their satisfaction, the Bajoga Committee report shows that they are not performing. The recommendation calls on the management of the university to carry out a further study to discover the reason for the dissatisfaction.
