Abstract
The concentrations of twelve trace and major elements were determined in dry and wet collections of Harmattan dust in Kano and Zaria Station. Various methods of extraction were tried, however, hydrofluoric acid - hydrochloric acid - nitric acid digestion; a modified hydrofluoric acid - hydrochloric acid digestion; and Hydrofluoric acid - Sodium Carbonate fusion hydrochloric acid digestion were found to be the most suitable. Determination of cobalt, chromium, copper, nickel, magnesium, manganese, Sodium, potassium, zinc, calcium Bead and iron in Harmattan dust samples were carried out by atomic absorption spectroscopy. Two parameters were calculated: "enrichment factor" (Ef) which is the ratio of anelement to Fe in the media analysed relative to the ration of the same elements in soil (Crust), and the wet and drt deposition (WD and DD respectively) rates of the Harmattan dust. Attempts were made to charaterise the minerals in the Harmattan dust using X - ray diffraction technique, to determine the particle size ranges using sedimentation method, and to find the percentage of benzene soluble organic compounds in the sample
