A strong correlation has been reported between the occurrence of gastroenteritis in man following the consumption of unpasteurized raw milk and the isolation of biotypically in distinguished Campylobacter fetus subspecies jejuni from the faeces of the herd supplying the milk. To date in Nigeria, virtually no work has been done to determine the role of cattle in milk contamination by C. fetus subspecies jejuni. This work was therefore designed to determine the prevalence of the organism in cattle faeces, milk and milk products. In addition, attempts were made to determine the presence of virulence markers of the isolates, determine their susceptibility to antimicrobial agents commonly used in Nigeria and study factors that affect their survival in milk and milk products. A total of 1,000 rectal swabs and 300 raw milk samples were collected from cattle in randomly selected livestock, farms, Fulani herds and abattoirs. Also, 140 samples of locally fermented milk (nono) and local butter (maishanu) were purchased from Zaria markets in Zaria and it's environs. All tyese were cultured for Campylobacter fetus subspecies jejuni using Butzler's selective medium. Eleven isolates (1.1%) were obtained from the rectal swabs. No isolations were made from any of the raw milk samples and the milk products. There was no statistically significant difference in isolation rates among animals from different sources (P>0.05, 2 X = 1.36). The low carriage rate observed in c a t t l e faeces arid the absence of the organism in the milk and milk products suggest that c a t t l e may not be a major souce of the organism in this area.en_US
