Abstract
The study was directed at analyzing contemporary management challenges in the Nigeria Educational Sector. The broad aims of this study are : to identify the major source of funding to Niger State Polytechnic, Zungeru, the availability of instructional and study materials, the state of mind of academic staff to making career in teaching, and to recommend ways and means to enhance their performance. Information were collected through questionnaire administered to management staff, lecturers and students, interview and historical records. Documents from the Bursary, the polytechnic, Library, the Registry, the Rectory and the academic office were examined. Some officers of the above units were interviewed. Analysis of the Data involved the use of tables, chi-square etc. The following major findings were made. Firstly, the polytechnic' s major source of income through subvention from the government is inadequate. Secondly, because of poor funding, there are inadequate instructional aids and study materials to meet the challenges of tertiary education. Thirdly, the inadequate instructional aids and study materials has negatively affected students and staff performance. Fourthly, there is serious interference with management standard and fifthly, most of the academic staff would not make their career in teaching. Lastly the institution should exploit other avenues to boost its revenue base and staff welfare be improved upon.
