Abstract
ABSTRACT
A systematic and dedicated effort has been made to collect two-dimensional resistivity data
of the subsurface formation of a sewage treatment site on Ahmadu Bello University main
campus, Samaru, Zaria, Kaduna State of Nigeria, for research study. The Research site is
located within the South-West region of the main campus, between latitude 7.6570N to
7.6590N and longitude 11.1350 E to 11.1390 E, and part of the Kubanni Basin underlain by
Precambrian rocks of the Nigerian basement complex.
The main aim of the study is to use the two-dimensional Wenner based configuration
electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) technique to characterize the subsurface lithology
of the site. Electrical resistivity tomography method is based on the measurements of
electrical resistivity along a profile, where a series of electrodes (smart electrodes) are
regularly placed.
In all, geo-electrical surveys were carried out on a total of six profiles, two of equal length
of 300m each and the remaining four, 200m each long. The measured resistivity data were
used to deduce the true resistivity variation of the subsurface formation and related to
geological features or materials. The interpretation of the two dimensional pseudo sections
showed averagely top deposits or overburden thickness varying between 4m and 15m. The
depth to weathered basement rocks varies from about 4m to over 20m underneath some
parts of the sections. The fractured basement rock occurred averagely from depth above
15m, while fresh basement rock was encountered averagely from depth of 25m. Structural
viii
features suspected to be fault, that may serve as conduit for passage of waste were also
identified, particularly on model sections of profiles LundDam01 and LundDam02.
