dc.description.abstract | This study was concerned with appraising the activities of the university of the Air of the Centre for Adult Education and General Extension Ahmadu Bello University with particular reference to the Centre's Hausa by Radio Programmes. The broad purposes of the study were: 1. To explore the value of mass communication of long distance. 2. To evaluate the significance of multi-media work in distance teaching. 3. To establish the theoretical relationship between communication and education. The Specific aims were to: 1. Investigate the need that gave rise to the Centre for Adult Education and General Extension Services' University of the Air programmes, 2. State the function and programmes of the section and its various branches. 3. Find out the problems that the programme faces. 4. Examine and evaluate the Hausa by Radio programmes. ii The necessary data/information for this study was obtained through personal observation, interviews, analysis of records and administration of questionnaire by the researcher. Related literature was also reviewed. The study was delimited to four zonal Centres due to lack of time and funds. These were Kaduna, Kano. Jos and Zaria. The review of the relevant literature to this study revealed that: 1. Mass media can be used to help meet a variety of educational needs in and out of school. 2. They are being used in all regions of the world and in all sorts of countries and cultures. 3. Mass media can be used for various educational purposes and that they are always used in combination with other learning resources and experiences. As a result of this study the following conclusions have been drawn. 1. that the programmes of Hausa by Radio are adequately planned,? efficiently produced and sufficient air time is given to broadcast them. 2. that sufficient coordination exists among the production and technical teams in the Centre Headquarters and in the studies. iii 3. that the programmes are adequately financed. 4. that an over whelming majority of the respondents (listeners) find the programmes (broadcasts and study materials) useful in learning Hausa. 5. that broadcasting time is sufficient and generally convenient and that reception is clear and good. 6. as a result of this study it was also found out that an inadequate system of evaluation of the programmes exists at present. In conclusion, the researcher has made some suggestions and recommendations which, it is hoped, may contribute in some small way, to the improvement of the effectiveness of the university of the Air in general and the Hausa by radio programmes in particular. The highlights of these can be stated as follows: 1. that a better system of evaluation be established and utilised to assess the effectiveness of the programmes and the impression of the listeners about them. 2. that if possible contact sessions be arranged in the state Centres for the listeners who need them. iv 3. that a programme of advanced Hausa be started to meet general demand. 4. that a second programme in the series English by Radio be started to meet general and popular demand by Hausa speaking people to learn English. 5. that small listening and discussive groups be encouraged among listeners wherever possible. 6. that time within each programme be allocated to answer listeners questions, radio teachers questions and to discuss general problems arising from previous broadcasts. | en_US |
