Abstract
This study is to determine the Principal Journals that
a livestock library should subscribe to, obtaining the
highest possible Optimum utility of material usage.
Using a data base of 114 Journals titles for a period
of four years (198O-1983), citation and questionaire datas
were used to test for association between two independent
means of Journal selection. Would the most frequently cited
Journals in livestock industry differ from those actually
used in the N.A.P.R.I. Library?
The Bradford principle was applied to the data gathered
and the result is remarkably ccrralative. Again, the BradfordZipf
distribution was used to determine the core Journals
under the two situations, though the distribution couldn't
hold well for the 'use analysis' because of the small data,
it however still showed that the "Core Journals" determined
for the industry are those ranked higher in the ranking list
derieved.
Using the ranked list of Journals in the two approaches,
it was discovered that the Journal of Animal Science is the
most popular Journal in the industry and NAPRI Library with
citations of 889 and use score of 36 respectively.
The result further shows that 72 Journals from 144 (63%)
would satisfy over 90% of the needs of livestock scientists.
The principle was used to the data on departmental basis, and
it showed that for all the departments about 50% of the Journals
cited were actually cited and used. iv
It was observed that Nigeria Journals generally ranked
low in the industry. They need the necessary exposure for
international recognition. Finally, recommendations are then
given.
