Abstract
ABSTRACT
This work is a study of activities related to the management
of deposits and loans by the commercial banks in Nigeria.
Specifically Tropical Commercial Bank, Afribank and Credit
Lyonnais.
The study was set out to find out what methods and strategies
these hanks use in attracting optimum deposits and subsequently
how the credits are evaluated.
The findings which are the major work in chapters four and
five indicated that availability of funds, and "competition" play
the major role in determining interest on deposits. There seem
to be a correlation betwee; customer volume and the banks premises
aesthetics. Advertising was observed to be the major link between
the banks and their public.
In relation to credit management All the banks studied use
conventional methods. It seems quantitative techniques is yet to
be introduced.
Character and capacity are observed to be the bank's major
criteria of credit evaluation.
"Connection" is also generally used as a viable oriteria.
All the banks with the exception of Afribank follows the prudential
guidelines strictly in accounting for non-performlng loans.
Afribank in addition to the prudential guidelines has her own
policies.
