Abstract
ABSTRACT This work is a study of activities related to the management of deposits and loans by the commercial banks in Nigeria. Specifically Tropical Commercial Bank, Afribank and Credit Lyonnais. The study was set out to find out what methods and strategies these hanks use in attracting optimum deposits and subsequently how the credits are evaluated. The findings which are the major work in chapters four and five indicated that availability of funds, and "competition" play the major role in determining interest on deposits. There seem to be a correlation betwee; customer volume and the banks premises aesthetics. Advertising was observed to be the major link between the banks and their public. In relation to credit management All the banks studied use conventional methods. It seems quantitative techniques is yet to be introduced. Character and capacity are observed to be the bank's major criteria of credit evaluation. "Connection" is also generally used as a viable oriteria. All the banks with the exception of Afribank follows the prudential guidelines strictly in accounting for non-performlng loans. Afribank in addition to the prudential guidelines has her own policies. v i i Finally, the tented hypotheses indicated that there is no significant difference in the strategic approaches of the these banks in both credit and deposit management
