DETERMINANTS OF COLLEGES OF EDUCATION BUSINESS EDUCATION STUDENTS’ CHOICE OF OFFICE TECHNOLOGY AND MANAGEMENT OPTION IN NORTH-WEST GEO-POLITICAL ZONE, NIGERIA

Abstract
The study was conducted to establish the determinants of business education students’ choice of Office Technology and Management (OTM) in business education in colleges of education in the North-Western States, Nigeria. The study was necessitated by the continuous decline of business education students’ choice of Office Technology and Management in Colleges of Education in the North western States, Nigeria, which has resulted into escalating shortage of Office Technology and Management teachers in secondary schools to teach shorthand, typewriting and office procedures and corresponding shortage of Office Technology and Management educators to lecture in tertiary institutions in Nigeria. Survey research design was adopted for the study. The study has six research questions to guide the study and six null hypotheses to be tested at 0.05 level of significance. The entire seven hundred and sixty-six (766) NCE III (accounting and Office Technology and Management) students and lecturers from all the colleges of education in the North-Western States, Nigeria offering business education programme were used for the study. Fifty seven percent (57%) copies of questionnaire which were properly completed were retrieved and subjected to statistical analyses. Weighted Mean was used to answer the research questions. Weighted mean of 2.5 and above was used as benchmark for agree while weighted mean of less than 2.5 represented disagree category. Logistic Regression was used to test all the null hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The study revealed among others that prestige has significant influence on business education students’ choice of Office Technology and Management in colleges of education in the North Western States, Nigeria. Based on this finding, the researcher concluded that if the nomenclature of the practitioners of office technology and management in the world of work remains as secretaries, there will be continuous decline of business education xv students’ enrolment into the option and this will consequently result to continuous inadequacy in the number of trained office technology and management teachers or lecturers in institutions of learning and office occupation in the future. In view of this conclusion, it was recommended that the nomenclature of the office technology and management practitioners in the world of work should be “Administrative Assistants” or “Office Managers” instead of secretaries.
