Abstract
A geoelectric investigation employing vertical electrical soundings (VES) using the Ajayi-Makinde two-electrode method, as used by Makinde (1996), and the conventional Schlumbcrger configuration was carried out in the Main Campus of Ahmadu Bello University (A.B.U.) Zaria with the aim of testing the reliability and effectiveness of the said two-electrode method. Results of the VES interpretation obtained in this work using the two-electrode method have compared very well with those obtained from Schlumbcrger data gathered in this work at the same VES stations used for the two-electrode method. The areas of good agreement between the results of the two methods include: depth-to-basemenl values (about 86 %), layer thicknesses (about 72 %) and resistivity values of the various layers (about 52 %). Interpretation of the two-electrode data and the Schlumbcrger data revealed that the layering in the study area varied from 3 to 4 layers. The resistivity values of the top or sueface layer, second layer and basement from the two-electrode method varied from 70 - 450 -m, 98 - 813 -m and 1000 - 3000 -m respectively while those from the Schlumberger configuration data varied from 89 - 434 -m, 59 - 634 -m and 1000 - 3300 -m for the surface layer, second layer and the basement respectively. The two methods show that the geometry of the bedrock underlying the Main Campus is undulating with depth values increasing away from the central part of the study area towards the southern, western and eastern parts of the study area. The depth to the bedrock obtained from the two-electrode method ranges from about 11.5 m in the central part of the study area to about 30.0 in around the southern end of the study area, while that obtained from the Schlumberger configuration ranges from about 9.0 in in the central part of the study area to about 28.0 m in the southern end of the study area.
