Abstract
ABSTRACT
The success of every society depends deeply on the quality
and quantity of education of its citizens. Adult literacy programme
was designed to empower the adult members with basic literacy
and functional education needed for their improvement. It has been
a bottle neck to improve the implementation of adult literacy
programme in the study area. Government and individuals have
yearned for functional Adult Literacy programme but to no avail. It
was on the basis of these background that the study was
undertaken. The study is a descriptive Survey research. Findings
from the selected respondents as representative sample were
generalized on the entire target population. Five research questions
were raised and answered in the course of the study and five
hypotheses were stated and tested in the course of the
investigation. Frequency counts and percentages, t-test and X2
were employed as statistical tool in the analysis of data. One of the
major findings was that implementation of adult literacy
programme has enabled many adult (both male and female) to
become educationally empowered. Some of the beneficiaries of the
programme got jobs, others improved upon their jobs and also got
promotions. It has positive impact on the socio-economic

development of the study area. It was recommended that all hands
should be on deck in order to continue to improve upon the Adult
Literacy programme curriculum in the study area and in the
country as a whole. The study concluded that Adult Literacy
programme implementation in Zaria L.G.A. is a viable and good
programme worthy of encouragement. The prospects of the
programme over whelmed the problems and should be continually
encouraged by all the three tiers of government.
