Abstract
This study, on "The Relationship Between Job Performance and Job Satisfaction of Lecturers of the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU)" was undertaken to examine the relationship between job performance and job satisfaction among ABU lecturers. It was to also establish whether lecturers perform optimally in their primary assignment and whether they derive more of intrinsic satisfaction as compared with non-intrinsic satisfaction. These factors were identified and discussed. This study is limited only to lecturers of Ahmadu Bello University The study covered a period of 10 years (1989 to 1999), Assistant Lecturers and other academic staff up to Professors were used for the study. Seven research questions and six minor hypotheses with one major hypothesis were raised for the study. The instrument used for gathering the data was structured questionnaires drawn out on a four-point Likert Scale. The Instrument was validated by conducting a pilot study in 12 Faculties of the Ahmadu Bello University. A spilt-half method of analysis was adopted, using Spearman Rank Difference Correlation Coefficient "R". A Correlation Coefficient of 0.81 was obtained. A reliability Coefficient of 0.89 was also obtained for the questionnaire using the Spearman-Brown formula as Estimated Reliability. The above results indicated that the instrument was valid and reliable. Out of 278 sampled respondents, 220 actually responded. Seven null hypotheses -viiiwere formulated for testing of data collected. Sixty items were drawn on the questionnaire. The analyses were grouped under four sections, biodata, job satisfaction, job performance and job assessment. The statistical measurements employed in analyzing the data were the One-Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient and T-test. Three out of seven hypotheses showed that there was no significant difference in the opinions of the respondents. The findings revealed among others things that: There is a positive relationship between job satisfaction and job performance of lecturers of Ahmadu Bello University. There is also a positive relationship between provision of facilities and job satisfaction of lecturers of Ahmadu Bello University. The female lecturers are more dissatisfied with their job than the male lecturers.
