T The study is an analysis of female participation in art education: a survey of four selected higher institutions in the Northern States of Nigeria. The four Higher Institutions selected were, two Colleges of Education and two Universities. It is a comparative analysis of views of students and lecturers on reasons of poor female enrolment in art related course. Responses received from respondents revealed some of the reasons why few women participate in art education. These reasons included cultural practice, time factor, restrictions based on gender and sex roles in society, domestic chores, raising of children and so on. Also, the study discovered that in order to improve on women participation in art education certain motivational strategies were suggested by respondents. These included motivations such as award of special scholarship to women, art as a compulsory subject at junior secondary school levels. This is to say that despite the inclusion of art in the curriculum, many junior secondary schools students are not given the opportunity to study art. This signals the need to re-examine the lukewarm behaviours as exhibited by government, school administrators, parents/guardians and the general public towards art as an area of study among others. Therefore, art should be made availableen_US
