Abstract
Abstract This study evaluated the income and employment opportunities in poultry farming using Kaduna South Local Government Area as a case study. The main objectives were to analyze the poultry farming value chain in the study area, evaluate its income and employment opportunities and examine the challenges faced in poultry farming. Farm budgeting techniques was used to determine income opportunities while production function was used to determine employment potential. The study used primary source of data and employed descriptive statistics to analyze the data generated in the layer and broiler value chains which converge at the distribution segment. The study generated four main findings. First, the two value chains have positive rates of returns. However, the broiler value chain has the higher rate of return. Second, the distribution part of the value chain has higher potential for employment generation. Third, the relationship between flock size and profit levels is direct. This implies that scaling up of production will significantly increase profits. Fourth, Cost of feed is the highest variable cost in both layer and broiler farms. We conclude that income and employment potential of the poultry value chains is significant and could be actualized by a significant scaling up of activities. Second, a reduction in costs of feed will significantly reduce costs of production and increase income generated in the farms. The findings of the study recommend that policy makers encourage investments in all the segments of the value chain also policies targeting reduction of cost of feed should be formulated.
