dc.description.abstractThis study “Semantic Deviation in Some Selected Poems of Sheikh Muhammad Mustapha Maijama’a: A Stylistic Study” attempts to explore some evidences in the semantic deviation in some poems of the Sheikh Muhammad Mustapha Maijama’a. Semantic deviation is something unavoidable in poems. There is no poem without it. It is the basic rudiment which makes poems unique and captivating. Its objective is to give a shift in the meaning of a word or phrase in a poem. It gives a poet the right to poetically use words or phrases from its usual and widely known meanings to unusual ones. The study explores the semantic deviation of some words and phrases in some selected poems of Sheikh Muhammad Mustapha Maijama’a. It pinpoints, presents and analyzes the words and phrases that semantically deviated from their usual meanings. It also discusses the semantic deviation and what it encompasses in rhetoric in forms of simile, metaphorical and metonymical expressions as well as figurative use of words and phrases. The study is significant to learners and researchers as it will help them know what the Nigerian scholars have done in developing the Arabic language through showing what is common and otherwise in meaning-shift. The study employed the historical and descriptive methods in collection and analysis of data used. The scope of the study is bordered on some selected poems of Sheikh Mustapha Maijama’a. The result of the study shows that the semantic deviation contributes a lot in the explanation of the meaning of some words and phrases of the analyzed poems, especially the simile and metaphor. The study explored 120 places where semantic deviation has occurred in the selected poems.en_US
