dc.description.abstract | Investications to find the effect of water stress during the reproductive phase of wheat under different levels of nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizers were carried out at Samaru, Zaria (Lat. 11° 11 N, Long, 07° 38' E). Water stress was imposed during the flowering, milk, and milk-dough periods. Water stress reduced the grain yield by 31% when stress occured at flowering, and by 15.46% and 14.893' at milk and milk-dough periods, respectively. The yield reduction occured through reduction in the number of grains/spike in case of stress at flowering, and through reduction in grain weight/spike in case of stress at milk and milk-dough periods. Nitrogen levels used were 0, 60 and 120kg N/ha. Nitrogen positively increased all the parameters examined, especially the vegetative growth. Most of the reproductive components responded significantly to only 60 N kg/ha. Zero and 30kg P2O5/ha levels of phosphorus were used. Phosphorus on its own did not significantly affect most of the parameters except the leaf area/plant and grain yield. However, the nitrogen-phosphorus interaction showed that nitrogen application without30kg P205 /ha produced little effect above 60kg N/ha. Application of 30kg P205/ha without nitrogen tended to have negative effect or no significant effect all but the yield of wheat crop responded significantly to the application of 120kg N/ha when 30kg P205 /ha was applied. | en_US |
