The study was concerned with antenatal mothers' problems and their coping strategies in some selected hospitals in Zaria. The main objectives of the study was to find out the antenatal problems and possible coping techniques of the expectant mothers in order to establish a base for counsellors to provide counselling services in the medical setting. Three major research questions were posed and answered. In addition, the following null hypotheses were stated and tested at 0.05 level of significance. 1. There is no significant differences in the strategies recommended to the expectant mothers by nursing sisters in Ahmadu Hello University Teaching Hospital, Tudun wada, Sick Bay Antenatal Clinic and Kofan kayan Hospital in Zaria City. 2. There is no significance difference between coping strategies of expectant mothers and strategies recommended by the nursing sisters and midwives in antenatal clinics in Zaria. 3. There is no significant difference between the literate and illiterate expectant mothers' problems. 4. There is no significant difference in the recommended coping strategies by the married and single nursing sisters and midwives to the expectant mothers in Zaria. 5. There Is no significant difference in the coping strategies of the illiterate and literate expectant mothers1 problems. The sample size for the study was 287 randomly selected subjects of which 236 were expectant mothers and 51 were nursing sisters and midlives in the three antenatal clinics used for the study in Zaria. The main instruments used for the data collection were the questionnaire and the interview guide which were both designed by the researcher. Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and T-test statistical techniques were used to analyse the data and all hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. Three of the above stated hypotheses (1, 3 and 4) were retained and two of them (2 and 5) were rejected. The study revealed the following as the major findings:- 1. Abnormal frequency of urination during pregnancy, backache, nausea and vomiting, and constant day dreaming constitute the mot serious problems of expectant mothers. 2. The mean scores for general cleanliness, attending antenatal clinic, abiding by nurses advice, taking balanced diets, prayers, sleeping and resting ranked very high in the areas of coping strategies. From these results the fallowing major recommendations were made:- a) That group counselling involving the guidance counsellor and other medical personnel at the antenatal clinics be organised for the expectant mothers. b) That the government as a matter of urgency should set up counselling unit within the premises of hospitals where by guidance counsellor will be posted to work hand in hand with medical personnel for improving the well being of expectant mothers. c) Guidance and counselling should be incorporated into nurses and midwives curriculum so that they can get proper orientation of the basic concepts in guidance and counselling.en_US
