dc.description.abstractThis study examines the literature cited by social scientists in Nigerian Journal o f . Economic and Social Studies to identify core literature different. Journal cited, formats, languages and subjects of citations and to find out if there were differences in the pattern of citations. The study determined if materials identified as core from the study were available in two centres ; Centre for Social and Economic Research of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria and Nigerian Institute for Social and Economic Reseach of University of Ibadan, Ibadan. Six volumes of the Journal were used for the study at three years interval and the citations in the volumes were analaysed individually to arrive at the findings. Bradford's law was used in analysing the data to arrive at the core of journals cited. The journals arrived at as the core were checked against the holdings of the libraries of Centres for Social and Economic Research in Nigeria. Books (monograph) were the most cited format of publications with 1143 (46.53%) citations followed by journals with 887 (36.11%) citations. Two journals titles were identified as core and these two journals titles were available in the libraries. When the cited literature were checked against the collection of the libraries, Centre for Social and Economic Research library of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria did not have books within her collections. While 50 (45.45 %) out of the 110 cited books were available in the library of Nigeria Institute for Social and Economic Research, Ibadan. Economics was identified as the most cited subject with 1176 (57.73%), thereby stressing that the field of Social Sciences is subject centered. English language was most cited language with 2,463 (99.83%) citations. Social Scientists rely heavily on fairly old materials for their informationen_US
