Abstract
The purpose of this study was to Evaluate Students'
Performances in Internal and External Christian Religious
Studies Examinations in selected Secondary Schools in Osun
State.
The subjects of the study were students who graduated
from the selected Secondary Schools from 1908 - 1992. Six
Senior Secondary Schools were geographically sampled from the
Six educational Zones in the State. The variables examined in
the study include; Students' performances in Mock examinations
and that of SSCE from 190S 1997.
The tool used to gather data for the study was the
questionnaire for teachers. Then students' SSCE test scores
in CRE results for five years were collected from the schools
unit of the Osun State Ministry of Education in Osogbo.
After gathering the data, five hypotheses were then
tested and the findings are as follows:
1. Students of the selected Secondary Schools in Osun
State recorded a generally low performance in CRE
at the SSCE within the period 190S - 1992.
2. Within the same period, the same sets of students
also recorded low performance at Mock examinations.
3. Though the Mock examination has served as a good
predictor of students' performance in the SSCE, it
as not been able to serve as a motivator for
better performance in most schools.
4. The performance of students taught and examined by
teachers who have higher professional qualification
were better than those examined by less qualified
teachers. This was however the case in Mock but
not in the SSCE.
5. The performance of students taught and examined by
teachers who have more teaching experience were not
significantly better than those taught by teachers
with less experience. This is also found to be
true only in Mock examinations.
6. CRT teachers agree that teachers limit Mock
examination questions to only topics covered in the
class.
7. CRE teachers are of the opinion that class revision
and coverage of more topics after Mock examinations
make students perform better in the SSCE.
8. Most CRE teachers in the Senior Secondary Schools
do not make proper use of their knowledge of
teaching methods to show the evidence of high
professional ism.
9. Most Schools do not have a proper way of keeping
records most especially students' examination
results.
