Abstract
The study examined the Relationship between Post Traumatic Stress Reaction and School
Adjustment among Primary School pupils living in Conflict Areas of Wukari, Taraba
State. From a population of 49,950, a sample of 382 pupils, out of which 211were males
(54.4%) and 170 females (44.6%) was randomly selected. The study was guided by three
major objectives. The first was to examine the relationship between post traumatic stress
reaction and school adjustment, second was to find out the relationship between post
traumatic stress reaction and school adjustment on the bases of gender, and the third was
to examine the relationship between posttraumatic stress reaction and school adjustment
base on school type. A total of three hypotheses were formulated and tested. Ex post facto
design was employed in the conduct of the study. The instruments used to collect data
were Biodata form, Child Reaction to Traumatic Events Scale CRTES-R (Jones, Fletcher
& Ribbe, 2002) and Child Adjustment Scale CAS (Santrock & Warshark, 1979). Pearson
Product Moment Coefficient (r) was the statistical tool used to analyze the data. Results of
the analysis indicated that Pupils’ posttraumatic stress reaction negatively correlated with
their school adjustment (r= -0.875, p=0.000). Similarly, negative influence exists between
male and female pupils’ posttraumatic stress reaction on their school adjustment (r=-
0.913, p=0.000. r=-0.818, p=0.000) and significant negative correlation also exist in
Conventional and Nomadic school pupils’ posttraumatic stress reaction on their school
adjustment (r=-0.874 p=0.000. r=-0.881). It was recommended that appropriate
psychological intervention should be given to the pupils who have suffered post traumatic
stress reaction so as to enhance their school adjustment through school psychologists,
counsellors and teachers among others.
