Abstract
Field experiments were conducted at Samaru during the 1995 and
1996 wet sesons to study the effects of lime, nitrogen and
phosphorus on growth, yield and yield components of cowpea (Vigna
unguiculata (L.) Walp).
The experiment consisted of 27 treatments, replicated three
times and laid out in a split-plot design.
The effect of lime on growth parameters was significant during
growth. At 12 WAS, number of primary branches per plant, leaf area
index, number of leaves per plant, leaf dry weight, stem dry weight
and plant height responded to lime significantly upto the highest
rate of l000kg/ha.
Plant height, stem dry weight, root dry weight, leaf dry
weight, number of leaves per plant, number of primary branches per
plant, leaf area index and total dry matter per plant at harvest
were all significantly increased with the application of nitrogen
and phosphorus. Leaf area index, number of primary branches per
plant, leaf dry weight per plant at 12 WAS and total dry matter per
plant at harvest did not respond to nitrogen above the N-rate of
20kg/ha and the phosphorus of 15kg/ha.
Lime and nitrogen did not significantly increase grain yield ,
but the interaction between nitrogen and phosphorus significantly
increased grain yield. Grain yield, number of pods per plant and
days to 50% flowering were significantly increased by phosphorus
application to cowpea upto the highest P-rate of 30kg/ha while Prate
of 15kg/ha was enough for the number of seeds per pod
