The purpose of the study was to determine teacher competence in identifying and correcting essay errors committed by SSS1 students in Secondary Schools in' Yobe State. To this effect, 32 secondary schools, 76 teachers and 376 scripts were randomly sampled and used. Seventy-six copies of structured questionnaire and two essay tests (one narrative and one argumentative) were used for data collection. Four null hypotheses were formulated and tested using inferential statistical teats of Pearson Product Moment correlation coefficient ( r) and t tests which were used to test for significant relationship and mean difference respectively. The analysis showed, among other things, that there was a significant relationship between teachers' academic qualifications, and level of competence in identifying and correcting essay errors; mean difference between teaching experience and level of competence; gender and level of competence in error identification and correction. Based on the findings, it was recommended, among other things, that more essay assignments for practice should be given to the students once in a week as a rule in Yobe State. Refresher courses should be organized every term for English Language teachers to update their knowledge in essay teaching, error identification and correction; a similar research should be conducted in other States so as to develop a blue-prints for use by English Language teachers.en_US
