Abstract
Thirty-eight varieties of groundnut(Arachis hypogea L.) harvested approximately four months after planting date were assessed for forage yield (FOYLD) leaf to stem ratio, (LFST) , dry pod yield (DPYLD) , shelling (SHLG) and seed yield (SEYLD). The chemical composition-crude protein (N x 6.25) and neutral detergent fibre (NDF) of forage, and rumen degradation characteristics of leaf and stem portions were also determined. There were significant differences (P<0.05) among varieties in dry pod yield, seed yield, potential degradability, rate of degradation and effective degradability. Dry pod yield varied among varieties from 1457 kg/ha to 3980 kg/ha, while SEYLD was from 729 kg/ha to 2218 kg/ha. Forage yield varied from 2177 kg/ha to 7831 kg/ha. Leaf potential degradability (PD) varied from 678 g/kg to 914 g/kg dry matter (DM) while stem PD was from 538 g/kg to 702 g/kg DM. Both the leaf and stem fractions had protein content above 7%, which would suffice for the protein needs of cattle for maintenance. Varieties assessed were recommended for the dual purpose needs of the farmer with regards to seed and forage yields. Farmers who have a bias for seed production are recommended to use M572 - 801, ICGV 86222, RMP 12 and M554 - 76. These had seed yields from 2003 kg/ha to 2218 kg/ha. Varieties recommended for forage production were M170 - 801, 2546 - 79, 42 - 85, and UGA 2. The forage dry matter yields of these varieties varied from 6459 kg/ha to 7831 kg/ha of dry matter.
