dc.description.abstractA Comparative Study of Organization and Administration of Selected UPE and Six Private Fee-Paying Primary Schools in Zaria L.G.A. of Kaduna State. The purpose of this study was to investigate the believe that private, fee-paying primary schools in Zaria L.G.A. of Kaduna State have higher academic standard than the UPE schools in the same area. Specifically, the study focused on the organizational and administrative variables, such as school finance, curricular activities, staffing, superrvision, learning facilities and school-community relations, that were considered capable of stimulating differences in academic attainment between the two types of schools, The study was considered necessary for providing empirical evidence for clarifying the issue of which type of primary school offers what quality of education and for generating data that can enhance greater understanding of the relationship between the variables investigated and the achievement of the objectives of primary education in the area under study. A proportionate random sampling method was used in selecting the 252 UPE Headmasters and headmistresses who constituted part of the sample population of the study. All the Headmasters and Headmistresses of the six private fee-paying primary schools in Zaria L.G.A, re included in the sample. Questionnaire, interview and documents were used in collecting data while tables and percentages were adopted as methods of analysis. Eight hypotheses were stated and analysed in the light of the findings. Some of the major findings are: (1) Private fee-paying primary schools in Zaria L.G.A. recorded higher percentages of success than the UPE schools in the Common Entrance Examination Results for 1981/32 and 1982/83 academic sessions. (2) There were more- qualified teachers in the private fee-paying primary schools than there were in the UPE schools. (3) Teachers in the private fee-paying primary schools had better conditions of service than their UPE schools' counterparts. (4) There was greater teacher turnover rate in the UPE schools than in the private fee-paying primary schools. (5) Supervision of teachers and pupils in the private fee-paying schools was better organized and more frequent than the case was with the UPE Schools. (6) There was gre parental participation in the affairs of private fee-paying primary schools than the case was with the UPE schools. These findings may not be generalized beyond the area under study. study concluded with some recommendations, based on the findings, for the improvement of primary education in Zaria Local Government Area of Kaduna State,en_US
