S ABSTRACT KATSINA GOBARAU MUSUEM INTRODUCTION The 350 years old Katsina Gobarau minaret, built during Habe dynasty of rulership by Korau, was built to serve as a mosque at that time. The minaret today is a state of disrepairs and left to the mercy of weather. Katsina being an historic town has many historic and cultural heritage, but lack facilites to express it formally. During an exhibition titled "THE ARTS OF THE HAUSA" presented at Commonwealth Institute, London as part of world of Islam festival in 1976, many of the exhibits came from Katsina. Katsina would represent an ideal base for such a display. PROBLEMS To avoid the instant disappearance of such historic relic, there is a need to restore and preserve it. To show some respect on traditional building construction, since something valuable is left to start with. In view of these and other reasons, there is a need for an institution to bring together all these cultural attributes at a single forcal point within the town. Possibly, a museum - to r e s t o r e, preserve, and exhibit them. Henry H. Saylor - defines a museum as a building, or place, for the preservation, and public inspection of rare and instructive objects. GOALS The main aim is to restore/preserve and exhibit GOBARAU minaret and other antiques. It is also aimed at educating and providing recreational facilities. It will also provide avenues for public enlightenment and a place for people to come together see/discuss their cultural heritage. OBJECTIVES To educate, i.e by constructive instruction and enlightenment of public, hence facilities like lecture halls, libraries, auditoriums, etc. Curotorials for proper restoration of the minaret and display of collections, articulated spaces like offices for administration, exhibition galleries, research and preparation laboratories, workshops, etc are needed. Finally, public services and enlightenment facilities for public enjoyment like garden, snack shop, bar, restaurant, craft shop, and temporary exhibition concourse will be provided.en_US
