Abstract
ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study was to examine and
describe the patterns of communication in the English
Language classroom within a mini-teaching framework.
The subjects were third year students on long vacation
course in the Language Arts Section of the Department
of Education, Ahraadu Bello University, Zaria.
The students were in two groups vizs (1) Experimental,
and (2) Control. They were observed teaching
four lessons in the area of grammatical structures„
All the lessons were videotaped.
An instrument FOCUS, was used to explore whether
there was any difference(s) between the pre-treatment
and post-treatment lessons in the following:
1. Course and target of communication?
2. Move type of communication;
3. The mediums used for communication?
4. The pedagogical use of the mediums for
communication; and
5. The content of communication.
The major thrust of the study was to explore the
patterns of communication in the lessons of the thirty
subjects, using a FOCUS-Based analysis. To look
beyond statistics, the classes of some of the teachers
were selected for discussion because they were
identified as belonging to the same
manifested teaching technique changes that were not
in the same direction.
FOCUS, within the constraints of this study,
was shown to be a reliable means of analyzing English
Language classroom communication, to be of use to
researchers who want to study the patterns of classroom
interaction, and to be of use to teachers/
supervisors who want to look at teaching regardless
of the approach to teaching, FOCUS was equally shown
to be a reliable means of identifying sources, moves,
contents and teacher use of mediums,
