Abstract
The study analyzed the relationship in the use of cohesive patterns and the performance of written discourse by Hausa students. The study also examined various grammatical cohesion of Hausa student written essay. In the study,four (4) researched questions which were based on Halliday and Hassan (1976) taxonomy of cohesive relationship were considered. The sampled population covers SS two Hausa students from three (3) Government Secondary Schools inZaria; with total population of 1271. 10% of this population was the sample size.Data collections were done using written essay of Hausa students and identification of cohesive patterns such as reference, substitution, conjunctions and ellipsis. The study employed descriptive research in other to evaluate the performance of the students and to analyze the relationship in the use of cohesive device. Summary of findings on the relationship in the use of cohesive patterns and the students’ written performance was stated. Significant relationship did exist between the use of reference, substitution, conjunction and the written English performance of Hausa students in secondary schools in Zaria. However, significant relationship did not exist between the use of ellipsis and the written English performance of Hausa students.The study recommended that cohesive patterns in English should be given adequate consideration in order to improve Hausastudents’ written English performance especially at the SS level of government secondary school, Zaria.
