Abstract
The role of family structure can not be over emphasized on the social and
emotional behaviors of adolescents which have a great influence on their
educational and physical attainment. The adolescence period is the
transitional stage between childhood and adulthood. Parents have the task
of directing the behavioral development of adolescents towards the desired
normative emotional and socially valued goals. Therefore the aim of this
study was to determine how the family structure affects the social and
emotional behavior of adolescent students. A total of 370 adolescents were
selected from 12 senior secondary schools in 3 senatorial districts of
Kaduna State. A multistage sampling technique was used to select 370
samples from 6963 students in public senior secondary schools,
questionnaire and students affective/psychomotor records were used for the
collection of data from the students and their teachers. Descriptive
statistical analysis was used for analyzing the research questions. While ttest
statistics was used for testing the null hypotheses 1- 4 at 0.05 level
significant and Pearson product moment correlation coefficient for testing
the relationship between the emotional and social behavior and
psychomotor domain scored by their teachers. The results of this study
showed that the family structure of the adolescents influenced their social
and emotional behavior; Adolescents from single parent families and those
from dual parent families differed significantly in the social and emotional
behavior. It was also observed that adolescent from single mother families
emotional and social behavior was significantly different from adolescents
from single-father families. Based on these findings, it was recommended
that the father and mother should stay together for good upbringing of their
children.
