In the f i e l d of the study of a r t s in today modern world beginning p a r t i c u l a r l y from the twentieth century, individual a r t i s t s have evolved, new e t h i c s and the freedom to explore without hindrances, as demonstrated with new m a t e r i a l s , styles and subject matters they adopted. These p o s s i b i l i t i e s in freedom of expression, have motivated the r e s e a r c h to explore the p o s s i b i l i t i e s of finding a visual r e l a t i o n s h ip between colour and form, through a n a t u r a l i s t i c study of moods in p o r t r a i t u r e painting. P o r t r a i t u r e generally seems to be over-looked as an area of research problem in painting, maybe because photography has seemed taken care of i t . However, t h i s study has set to use p o r t r a i t u r e as a means of achieving a good degree of proficiency by employing colour to subjectively express d i f f e r e n t moods with the background colouration and vice versa. This study is conducted by studying a s e l e c t i o n of e a r l i e r works of p o r t r a i t p a i n t i n g s . Data was then collected through observation and sketches of d i f f e r e n t models, photographs, pictures from postcards, calendar and magazines. A systematic study of the p o r t r a i t s was c a r r i ed o u t . From these studies t h e researcher began to c r e a t e p o r t r a i t u r e of d i f f e r e n t categories, namely full figure p o r t r a i t u r e , three quarter p o r t r a i t u r e , grouped bust p o r t r a i t u r e and single p o r t r a i t u r e. From the data collected, it was found t h a t the use of l i f e posed models gives the sense of being c l o s e r to n a t u r e , which helps the researcher t o express these emotions in colour as it is f e l t at the period of study. It was discovered that the use of photographs and pictures may give t h e wrong impression of a person, and one works laboriously to record a good l i f e - l i k e n e s s of models. The use of unprofessional models does not encourage a good observation or s t u d i e s. It is therefore recommended that for an objective training of artist and research studies in life studies, the Fine Arts Department should make efforts in the future to employ professional models and also train the existing models.en_US
