Abstract
This study was designed to examine the effect of Activity-Based Instructional Strategy and Traditional Method on the academic performance of students in Integrated Science in Junior Secondary Schools Kaduna North Local Government Area. Three research question and three hypotheses were formulated to serve as a guide for the study. The research design used was Quasi-experimental where Pre-test and Post-test was used to achieve the objective of the study. sample comprised 238 junior Secondary School students (J.S.S.One), from Government Girls Junior Secondary School Independence Way and Asma’u Makarfi Government Secondary School Unguwan Shanu being the Experimental and Control female groups respectively. And Government Junior Secondary Doka Boys and Government Junior Secondary School Badarawa being the Experimental and Control male groups. The instrument used to asses the students performance was an adapted test (consisting of 30 objective test) of a multiple choice in Integrated science produced by Inyang and Nwaiwu (2001).The mean was used to answer the research question and the t-test statistic was used to test the hypotheses. The results indicated that(i) the Activity-Based strategy is more effective than the Traditional Method. (ii) The Traditional Method is also effective in a way since there was an improvement observed in the mean performance of students taught using it. (iii) The Traditional Method could be used with other methods such as Activity- Based for effective teaching and learning. The researcher concluded that if Integrated Science teachers could incorporate Activity-Based teaching strategy into their teaching methods there might be an improvement in academic performance of junior secondary schools students in Integrated Science.
